Camera Quality & Capabilities

The stand-out camera this year is on the DJI Mavic 4 Pro, sporting a large 1-inch sensor capable of shooting 5.1K video at 60fps and 20MP photos in RAW. The Autel EVO III also impresses with a 6K 30fps camera. But megapixels aren’t everything – the 4K 120fps and large pixels of the DJI Avata 2 make it ideal for fast-paced, high dynamic range FPV footage. Even the budget Hubsan Zino Mini SE shoots very respectable 4K, leveraging its 1/3-inch sensor and fast f/1.7 aperture.

Nearly all the cameras feature tracking autofocus systems and adjustable apertures. Higher-end models like the DJI Mavic 4 Pro, Autel EVO III, and Yuneec Typhoon H4 also have variable ND filters to better control exposure. Color profiles optimized for post-production are available on the leading prosumer drones.

Flight Time & Range

When it comes to flight time, the DJI Mavic 4 Pro is the new endurance champ with an impressive 45 minutes in the air on a single charge. This is thanks to its high-capacity battery and efficient aerodynamics and propulsion. The Autel EVO III and Hubsan Zino Mini SE are not far behind, hovering around 38-40 minutes.

The shortest flight times are on the smaller and more acrobatic models like the DJI Avata 2, which is optimized more for short, action-packed sessions than lengthy, gentle cruises.

All of these drones feature octocopter or hexacopter configurations and low-noise propellers for maximum stability and acoustic discretion. Transmission ranges are excellent across the board, with most models able to fly 6-15 km from the pilot thanks to advanced radio systems typically operating on 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz bands and leveraging beamforming and frequency hopping for robustness.

Speed & Agility

For those who like to fly fast, the DJI Avata 2 is the speed demon of the group, capable of hitting 96 kph in manual acro mode! This makes it ideal for drone racing or flying through tight spaces. The DJI Mavic 4 Pro is no slouch either, topping out at 72 kph.

The Autel EVO III, PowerVision PowerEgg X Wizard, and FIMI X9 are all capable of a sporty 65 kph, while the bulkier Yuneec Typhoon H4 sacrifices some top speed for greater stability as a platform for its large camera. The lightweight Hubsan Zino Mini SE and Skydio X4 are capped at a still-zippy 58 kph.

Autonomous Flight Modes

2024’s drones are smarter than ever, with the Skydio X4 leading the pack in autonomous flight capabilities. It features 360-degree obstacle avoidance thanks to six fisheye navigation cameras and a powerful NVIDIA Jetson TX2 onboard computer running Skydio’s Autonomy Engine 5.0 software.

This allows it to follow subjects while navigating complex environments and even predict and track multiple subjects. The DJI Mavic 4 Pro and Autel EVO III also have very robust omnidirectional obstacle avoidance and subject tracking modes, but can’t quite match the Skydio X4’s self-flying and self-navigating abilities.

The PowerVision PowerEgg X Wizard includes sonar and visual positioning systems that allow it to precisely hold position indoors without GPS, avoid obstacles in multiple directions, and track subjects while self-navigating.

Nearly all drones include standard intelligent flight modes like Orbit, Waypoints, Timelapse, Tracking, Boomerang, and Asteroid.

Portability and Form Factor

For maximum portability, the Hubsan Zino Mini SE is the most compact drone here, weighing just 249 grams and folding down to about the size of a soda can. This allows it to be easily carried in a small bag or even a large pocket. The DJI Mini series defined this category, but the Mini SE brings major improvements in sensor size, flight time, and transmission range while staying under the 250g weight limit above which drones must be registered in many jurisdictions.

The unique PowerVision PowerEgg X Wizard drone transforms between a folding quadcopter and a handheld gimbal configuration, making it highly versatile. Its arms and propellers retract into an egg-shaped plastic shell, allowing it to be safely gripped or set down on its side while the camera is aimed as desired.

On the larger end of the spectrum, the Yuneec Typhoon H4’s hexacopter design with forward-swept front arms gives it an aggressive look while allowing for an unobstructed view from the camera. Its landing gear retracts during flight to stay out of shots.

While larger than the ultra-portable drones, the DJI Mavic 4 Pro, Autel EVO III, FIMI X9 and Skydio X4 all feature folding designs that pack a lot of capability into backpack-friendly packages. The Mavic 4 Pro’s controller has been redesigned with stowable joysticks for even greater portability.

2024 has brought major strides in drone capabilities across the board, from pocketable platforms with 4K cameras to powerhouse prosumer rigs with large sensors and abundant flight features. As more people experience the thrill and utility of personal drones, and manufacturers continue to invest in the technology, the future of drones has never looked brighter.

Whether you’re looking for an easy-to-fly drone to document your travels, a reliable tool for professional aerial imaging, an immersive FPV aircraft, or a robotic flying companion that can follow you autonomously, there’s an outstanding option on the market this year. We hope this in-depth comparison has helped you understand the key features and choices available as you evaluate the top drones of 2024!
